Exchange of segments between non sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes is called crossing over. It occurs during pachytene stage of prophase I in meiosis. This is the process where two homologous non-sister chromatids pair up with each other and exchange different segments of genetic material to form two recombinant chromosome sister chromatids. The effect is to assort (shuffle) the alleles on parental chromosomes, so that the gametes carry combinations of genes different from either of the parent.
