Solution

Filtration: The process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid by allowing it to pass through the pores of a filter is called filtration.

Evaporation: Evaporation is the process of obtaining a non-volatile soluble solid from its solution by allowing the liquid portion to vaporize.

To separate common salt from a mixture of chalk powder and common salt:

  • A mixture of chalk powder and salt is dissolved in water.
  • While salt dissolves in water, chalk powder does not.
  • Next, filtrate is heated.
  • Water particles with salt dissolved in them can pass through the pores of a filter paper, but chalk particles cannot.

As a result, chalk powder is separated by filtration.

As the filtrate is heated, all the water evaporates and salt crystals are left behind.
