Microorganisms are used for the following purposes.

1. In the preparation of curd, bread and cake.
2. In the production of alcohol .
3. Used in cleaning up of the environment. For example, the organic wastes (vegetable peels, remains of animals, faeces, etc.) are broken down into harmless and usable substances by bacteria.
4. Bacteria are used in the preparation of medicines.
5. In agriculture, they are used to increase the soil fertility by fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere.
