  1. A sodium ion is a positively charged ion i.e. cation, which has one unit of positive charge.
  2. A sodium atom (Na) loses one electron from the outermost shell and forms a sodium ion (Na+)

Thus, a sodium ion is formed when a sodium atom loses one electron.
