Question

Explain how the maximum height of mountain on earth can be estimated from elastic behaviour of earth

Open in App
Solution

at the base of mountains pressure is => p=hdg (where h=height ,g=gravity of earth ,d=density of material of the mountain)

the pressure must be less than elastic limit of earth 's supporting material whose value for typical rocks is 300000000

hdg<300000000.

h<300000000/(10*3000).

h<10000,

which is greater than height of the mt. everest.
