Second, talk about the people behind the unification.(1 mark)
Third, talk about how the unification occurred.(1 mark)

Answer:
Italy was scattered over several dynastic states as well as the multi-national Habsburg Empire. During the 1830s, Giuseppe Mazzini, an Italian politician tried to create a unitary Italian Republic. He had also formed a secret society called Young Italy but failed to unify Italy. Later the state of Sardinia-Piedmont under its ruler King Victor Emmanuel II and Prime Minister Cavour unified the Italian states through war. They made a tactful diplomatic alliance with France. As a result of this, in 1859 CE Sardinia-Piedmont succeeded in defeating the Austrian forces. In 1860 CE, apart from regular troops, a large number of armed volunteers called Red Shirts, under the leadership of Guiseppe Garibaldi , entered South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. They drove out the Spanish rulers with the help and support of the local peasants. When France withdrew its troops from Rome, during the Franco Prussian war in 1870 CE, Victor Emmanuel II occupied and completed the unification of Italy.
