Solution

Golgi bodies:

  1. It is a cell organelle that is found in all eukaryotic cells.
  2. It helps process and package proteins and lipid molecules.
  3. Its structure is a stack of tightly aligned flattened sacs called cisternae.

Components of Golgi bodies:

There are four components of Golgi bodies. They are cisternae, tubules, vesicles, and vacuoles.

Cisternae:

  1. These are all of the membrane-bound sacs that are found in Golgi bodies.
  2. Their main function is the glycosylation of the proteins and lipids, and the synthesis of complex polysaccharides.
  3. There are approximately four to eight cisternae present in the Golgi body.
  4. These cisternae are held parallel and lie one above the other.
  5. These are filled with a lumen called the cisternal lumen.

Tubules:

  1. These are called microtubules which support the whole Golgi body.
  2. These are continuous with the peripheral edges of the stacked cisternae but their way of interconnection differs across the stack.

Vesicles:

  1. These are small sacs found attached at the end of tubules.
  2. These are of 2 types and they are smooth and coated vesicles.
  3. The smooth vesicles are called secretory vesicles as they have smooth surfaces containing secretor substances.
  4. The coated vesicles carry materials to and from the cisternae Golgian vacuoles and have a rough surface.

Vacuoles:

  1. These are formed from the concave face of the Golgi Apparatus.
  2. These have glandular substances which contain hydrolyzing enzymes.
