Explain the cycle of producing and releasing mature ova

Open in App
Solution

In humans a set of two ovaries is present and they are both functional. They are mainly involved in gamete formation and hormone secretion. Normally, ovaries produce one ovum per month or per menstrual cycle. They are involved in the secretion of secrete estrogen, testosterone, inhibin, and progesterone. These hormones are responsible for secondary sexual characteristics in females and for the maturation and maintenance of the female reproductive organs. The menstrual cycle is the periodic process of ovulation in female primates that also involves menstruation. It is a cyclic process and is divided into four phases- the follicular phase, the ovulatory phase, the luteal phase, and the menstrual phase. It is this cycle that makes pregnancy in females possible. Oogenesis is the process of development and maturation of an ovum. This process begins while the female is an embryo herself. During the embryonic growth, the ova undergoes mitosis to become a primordial follicle that is arrested at prophase I. On reaching puberty one of these ova gets releases as a primary follicle from the ovary each month.
