Explain the difference between mendelian disorder and chromosomal disorder?
Mendelian disorders:- Mendelian disorders refers to those disorders usually caused by mutation in a single gene, and follow the basic Mendelian principles of inheritance. Since genes are affected, mendelian disorders belong to the category of genetic disorders.
Chromosomal disorders:- Chromosomal disorders are those disorders caused due to changes in chromosome number or structure. Since genes are located on chromosomes, chromosomal disorders lead to changes in gene structure, arrangement, etc., and hence chromosomal disorders too are a type of genetic disorder.
Difference between mendelian disorder and chromosomal disorder:-
Chromosomal Disorders | Mendelian Disorders |
1. The disorders are caused by chromosomal abnormalities | 1. The disorders are caused by allelic abnormalities. |
2. Chromosomal abnormalities develop due to defective synapsis and disjunction. | 2. Allelic abnormalities develop due to mutations. |
3. The defect can be known through amniocentesis. | 3. The defect can be predicted through pedigree analysis. |
4. The disorder is rarely transmitted. | 4. The disorder is transmitted to the progeny. |
