Explain the directional property of magnets How do the poles of a magnet get their names ? Describe one application of this property.

When magnet is left freely on a horizontal surface, it aligns itself in geographic north to south direction.
As earth also have magnetic property thus by convection its geographic north is taken as magnetic south pole and towards this direction is north of magnet as opposite poles attract.
Application of this can be seen in magnetic compass which always points towards north.
