Question

Explain the effect of temperature and pressure on the solubility of gases in water.

Open in App
Solution

Effect of pressure on the solubility of gases in water:-

  • At any given temperature, the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the pressure on the surface of the liquid. This is known as Henry's law.
  • When we increase the pressure on the surface of the water, then the solubility of gases in water also increases.

Effect of temperature on the solubility of gases in water:-

  • An increase in the temperature of the water causes a decrease in the solubility of a gas in it as by increasing the temperature, the kinetic energy increases and the gases escape from the liquid.
