Explain the following:

Alkyl halides are insoluble in water though they contain a polar CX bond.

Solution

Water is polar and alkyl halide is also polartherefore, like should dissolve like. But alkyl halide is insoluble in water because Water forms H-bonding between Water - water molecule(H2OH2O) Which is strong interaction. When Alkyl halide is added to Water Interaction between Alkyl thalide and water is weaker than inter molecular H-bonding in water. Alkyl halide is neither able to from H - bond with water molecule Nor it is able to break H-bonding between water. That's why Alkyl halides are Insoluble in water.
