Question

Explain the following:

(b) During the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of NaCl,H+ions are reduced at cathode and not Na+ions.

Solution

  • This reason for the situation is that H+ions lie below Na+ions in electrochemical series.
  • Electrochemical series is a list of elements in which elements are ordered in the increasing electrode potential values.
  • Because of this, the H+ions get discharged in preference to the Na+ions.

During electrolysis, a solution ofNaCl H+ions is reduced at the cathode as it lies below the Na+ions in an electrochemical series.
