Explain the following reactions of chlorobenzene:
(i) Reaction with chlorine in the presence of $F e {C l}_{3}$ in dark, (ii) Fitting reaction.

Solution

(i) Chlorobenzene reacts ${C l}_{2}$ in presence of $F e {C l}_{3}$ to form ortho and para dichlorobenzene.
(ii) Fitting Reaction: When chlorobenzene are heated with sodium metal in absence of etheral solution, the halogen atom is replaced by alkyl group and the two phenyl rings unite forming diphenyl.
