Osmosis:

1. The diffusion of a substance from a region of lower concentration to higher concentration through a semi-permeable membrane is called osmosis.
2. It is a passive process and doesn't require any external energy.

Importance of osmosis:

1. It helps in the absorption of water by roots.
2. It leads to the intercellular movement of water.
3. It helps in the opening and closing of stomata.
4. Growing tips of roots remain turgid due to osmosis and hence are able to enter the soil.
