Explain the induction method of magnetizing an iron piece with an example.

The induction method of magnetizing an iron piece can be discussed below:

  1. Clamp a long iron nail as shown in the figure.
  2. Place some small iron pins below the nail.
  3. We observe that no pins cling to the nail.
  4. On bringing a magnet close to the top end of the nail, we observe that the pins are attracted by the nail and pins cling to the nail.
  5. Clearly, the nail gets magnetized due to the magnet and since the magnet is not in direct contact with the bar, therefore this method of magnetization is called as “induction method”.
  6. On the removal of the magnet, the pins fall down.
  7. The entire activity is shown in the figure below.
