Question

explain the nature of bond in chloroform and carbon tetrachloride

Open in App
Solution

1. Both the compounds CHCl3 and CCl4 are made of 4 covalent bonds each.

2. In CCl4, all four bonds are equivalent as all are C-Cl bonds.

3. In CHCl3, three bonds between C-Cl are equivalent but, C-H is polar as it develops a dipole due to -I effect of three Cl atoms.
