Question

Explain the non - liner shape of H2S and non planar shape of PCl3 using valence shell electron pair repulsion theory.

Open in App
Solution

Solution:

Shape of H2S molecule

In H2S molecule

* Number of bond pairs =2

* Number of bond pairs =2

H2S molecule is surrounded by total 4 electron pairs. So, the hybridisation of the central atom in H2S molecule will be sp3 . As two electron pairs are lone pairs and rest are bond pairs, so its shape is V or bent.

H2S molecule

V shape / Bent shape

Thus, the shpe of H2S is not linear.

Shape of PCl3 molecule

In PCl3 molecule:

* Number of bond pairs =3

* Number of lone pairs on central atom =1

PCl3 molecule is surrounded by total 4 electron pairs. So, the hybridisation of the central atom in PCl3 molecule will be sp3 . As one electron pair is lone pair and rest are bond pairs, so its shape is pyramidal.

Thus, the PCl3 molecle is a non-planar molecule.
