  1. Sound waves with a frequency range above 20000 Hz are called ultrasonic sound.
  2. SONAR stands for Sound Navigation And Ranging.
  3. SONAR makes use of ultrasonic sounds in them.
  4. SONAR consists of mainly two parts: A Transmitter and a Detector.
  5. Ultrasonic sounds are transmitted by the transmitter in the ship or the boat.
  6. These sound waves travel through the water and after striking the object in the sea bed, these are reflected back.
  7. These reflected sound waves are being sensed by the receivers.
  8. These signals are converted to electrical signals and are later interpreted.

  1. SONAR is used for underwater communication.
  2. Detection of enemy vessels.
  3. Helps in inspecting pipelines that carry oil and gas for possible damages.
