(a) Only all-glass apparatus should be used for the preparation of nitric acid by heating concentrated sulphuric acid and potassium nitrate because the nitric acid produced reacts with almost all the materials including cork and rubber except glass.

(b) It turns yellow because HNO3 decomposes by the action of light to give brown coloured NO2 which imparts a yellow colour to HNO3.
