Question

Explain why : solution of HCL in water turns blue litmus red and conduct electricity while a solution of the same gas in toluene (1) has no effect on Litmus and (2) does not conduct electricity.

Solution

1. HCl in water undergoes following reaction:

HCl + H2O H3O+ + Cl-

Due to the formation of ions, blue litmus turns red, and HCl solution becomes electrically conducting.

2. In toulene, the above reaction is not feasible and thus, blue litmus does not turn red and it is electrically non-conducting.
