Claviceps purpurea is an ergot fungi which grows on Rye plant and causes fungal disease ergot of rye in plants. The fruiting bodies of this fungus called sclerotia contain alkaloids known as ergot alkaloids. The alkaloids contain lysergic acid from which lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) drugs are derived. LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide) are powerful hallucinogens and change mood, behaviour and thoughts. They even make false imaginations due to which the person see or hears what is not even present there.
