Question

Factorize 3 x2 + 5x + 23 = 0 by splitting the middle term and find the value of x.

Open in App
Solution

Multiply 3 with 23 and we get 6.

Factors of 6 are,

1×6 = 6 sum 1+ 6 = 7

2×3= 6 sum 2+ 3 = 5

So our required pair of factors is 2 and 3.

3x2+5x+23=0

3x2+3x+2x+23=0

3x (x+3)+2 (x+3)=0

(3x+2) (x+3)=0

Factors are (3x+2),(x+3)

(3x+2)=0 or (x+3)=0

x=23 or x=3
