Question 20
Figure 17.1 shows a part of a forest
Write any three activities going on in the forest on the basis of this figure.
The forests cover one-third of all land on the Earth providing all varieties of resources for all life forms and thus support countless species. Forest plays an important role in maintaining the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It provides shelter for a wide variety of plants and animals. It prevents flood and soil erosion.
The three activities going on in the forest on the basis of the given figure are:
(i) Oxygen is given out by plant leaves, which is used by the animals for their respiration.
(ii) Carbon dioxide is consumed by the plants to prepare their food by the process of photosynthesis. The process of preparation of food by the green plants from the raw materials like sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll is called photosynthesis.
(iii) Nutrients are being added to the soil by the action of decomposers. The microorganisms which convert the dead remains of plants and animals into humus are known as decomposers. Some of the examples of decomposers are fungi and bacteria.
