Figure 3.21 shows the x-t plot of one-dimensional motion of a particle. Is it correct to say from the graph that the particle moves in a straight line for t < 0 and on a parabolic path for t >0 ? If not, suggest a suitable physical context for this graph.

The graph between the position and time does not show the trajectory of the path followed by an object. So, it is incorrect to say that the particle is moving in a straight line when t<0 and in a parabolic path when t>0.

The speed is increasing continuously. Therefore, this graph can show the position of the ball when dropped from an elevated position at the instant t=0.
