An electroscope is a device for detecting, measuring and finding the nature of a charge. An electroscope consists of a large earthed jar marked as C. A metal rod D is fitted into the mouth of the jar with the help of the plug B. On top of the plug is the metal disc A where the contact is made for detecting the charge of objects. At the lower end of the metal rod a pair of thin leaves of gold or aluminium marked E is suspended.
In case of a negatively charged electroscope, the parts A, D and E are negatively charged and are conductors. The parts B and D do not possess any charge and are insulators.
