The first 7 pairs of ribs in a rib cage are true ribs. Through costal cartilages, true ribs are attached to the sternum or breast-bone called the sternum.
The 8th, 9th, and 10th pairs of ribs do not articulate directly with sternum but join the 7th rib with the help of hyaline cartilage. This three pairs are called false ribs.
The 11th and 12th pairs of ribs in a rib cage are floating ribs. Floating ribs are not attached to the sternum.
