Solution
The correct option is C d - 4
• Cyanobacteria are the gram-negative bacteria that are oxygenic photosynthetic. They are also known as Blue Green Algae. They have the capability of fixing atmospheric nitrogen due to the presence of a special type of cells called heterocysts. Due to this property nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria are used as biofertilizers. Biofertilizers contain organisms that can bring about nutrient availability to the crop plants. For example, the cyanobacterium Anabaena is used as biofertilizer in Rice fields.
• Mycorrhiza is the symbiotic association between fungi and the plant roots. Mycorrhiza is of two types: Ectomycorrhiza (When fungi forms an association on the surface of the roots) and Endomycorrhiza (When fungi extend the hyphae in the root cells). The hyphae of endomycorrhizal fungi penetrate the root cortical cells and form branched structures called arbuscles. Hence, these mycorrhizae are called Arbuscular mycorrhiza or AM. The major role of AM fungi is to supply host with the phosphorous. It is an extremely immobile element in the soil. The hyphae of AM fungi grows beyond the depletion zone and reach the pool of soluble phosphate.
• The soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis produces a Cry protein (crystal protein) which is toxic to the insect larvae. The gene encoding for Cry protein i.e. cry gene has been isolated and transferred into several crops to produce Bt crops.
• Single cell protein is the alternative source of proteins for animal and human nutrition. Microbes are grown on an industrial scale as a source of good protein. Spirulina is a commonly used microbe for single cell protein. It has a very high quantity of proteins.
Hence, from all the options given in the question, pair (d-4) is incorrectly matched.
