Question

Find the binding energy of an α-particle from the following data:
Mass of helium nucleus=4.001265 a.m.u; mass of proton =1.007277 a.m.u. Mass of neutron =1.00866 a.m.u (take 1 a.m.u=931.5 MeV)

Solution

α particle 42He

Given,

Mass of helium nucleus =4.001265 a.m.u
Mass of proton =1.007277 a.m.u
Mass of neutron =1.00866 a.m.u

We have Binding Energy, E=mc2

So, m= mass of Helium 2(mass of neutron + proton)
=4.0012652(1.007277+1.00866)=4.0012654.031874=0.030609u

E=mc2=0.030609×931.5MeV=28.5122835MeV
