Question

Find the equation of the line passing through the point (2,-5) and making an intercept of -3 on the Y axis.

Open in App
Solution

Equation of straight line y= mx+c

Given points (2,-5) ,(0,-3)

Equation when two points are given

m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

Y1= -5
Y2 = -3
X1= 2
X2= 0

m =( -3-(-5))/(0-2)

m =2/-2

m = -1

Then the equation for straight line

y - y1 = m ( x - x1 )

y +5 = -(x -2)

y = - x -3
