Question

Find the HCF of the following pair of polynomials:
2x2+x and 4x21

Open in App
Solution

We know that HCF is the highest common factor.

Factorise 2x2+x as follows:

2x2+x=x(2x+1)

Now, factorise 4x21 as follows:

4x21=(2x+1)(2x1) (using identity a2b2=(a+b)(ab))

Since the common factor between the polynomials 2x2+x and 4x21 is (2x+1).

Hence, the HCF is (2x+1).
