Find the number of hypervalent compounds among the following.
BF3,SF4,NCl3,PCl5,SiF4,BrF5,XeF2,BeCl2

Open in App
Solution

According to Lewis octet rule, an atom tends to have maximum of 8 electrons in their valence shells. Those that contain less than 8 electrons in their valence shell are called hypovalent and those contains more than 8 electrons in their valence shell are called hypervalent.

SF4,PCl5,BrF5 and XeF2 are hypervalent compounds.
SF4, PCl5 and XeF2 contain 10 electrons and BrF5 contains 12 electrons in their valence shells.

BF3 and BeCl2 contain 6 and 4 electrons respectively in their valence shells. They are hypovalent compounds.

NCl3 and SiF4 are normal compounds.
