According to Lewis octet rule, an atom tends to have maximum of 8 electrons in their valence shells. Those that contain less than 8 electrons in their valence shell are called hypovalent and those contains more than 8 electrons in their valence shell are called hypervalent.
SF4,PCl5,BrF5andXeF2 are hypervalent compounds. SF4,PCl5andXeF2 contain 10 electrons and BrF5 contains 12 electrons in their valence shells.
BF3andBeCl2 contain 6 and 4 electrons respectively in their valence shells. They are hypovalent compounds.
