Birth control is also known as contraception. Contraception refers to one or more actions, devices or medications which reduce the likelihood of pregnancy and childbirth. Birth control methods may work in several ways-
  • By using artificial barriers like condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms, vaults and contraceptive sponges, They prevent sperms from reaching the oocytes. Femidoms or female condoms are a thin rubber or polyurethane tube with a closed-end inside which is inserted inside the vagina. One advantage of this latex sheath condom is that it is easy to use and it not only obstructs the gamete transfer but also protects the vaginal tract from contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
  • By using different intrauterine devices (IUDs). IUDs are devices that are inserted into the uterus. There are different types of IUDs-
  • The first-generation (non-medicated) comprises Intrauterine Devices like lippes loops. rings etc.
The second-generation- copper-releasing IUDs like CuT, Cu7, multiload 375, etc.
The third-generation hormone-releasing consists of IUDs like progestasert and LNG-20. These methods of contraceptives increase phagocytosis of sperms inside the uterus, suppress sperm motility, make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and make the cervix hostile to sperms.
  • By using oral contraceptives, pills formed with hormonal or non-hormonal preparations.
  • Surgical methods where surgically cutting a small portion of vas deferens and fallopian tube in males and females respectively obstruct the transport of gametes.
