Question

Find the ratio of the potential differences that must be applied across the parallel and series combination of two identical capacitors so that the energy stored in the two cases becomes the same.

Solution

C2=2C1.
parallel combination:Ceq=3C1
Energy E=12×Ceq×V1²=32×C1V1²
Series combination:Ceq=C1C2C1+C2=2C13
EnergyE=12×23×C1×V22=12×C1×V22
Equating energies, we get V1:V2=2:3
The plot of energy vs Capacitance:
This will be linear if Voltage applied is assumed to be constant.
