Question

Find the rms, most probable and average speeds of SO2 at 27oC.

Open in App
Solution

m = molar mass of SO2 is. 64 gm. (6.4 x 102) kg/mol
T = 273+27 = 300K
R = gas constant = 8.314 joules/ mol k
To calculate RMs avg. speed.
μ = 3RTM
= 3×8.3146.4×102
= 19.74ms
to calculate RMs most probable speed,
Vmp = 2KTm
here, K is the Boltzmann cinstant whichis equal to 1.38×1023 J/k
Vmp = 2×1.38×1023×3006.4×102

Vmp = 129.37×1021
=3.59×1010
