Find the squares of the algebraic expressions given below:
(i) 2x − 3y
(ii) x − 2
(iii) 2x − 1
We know that (x − y)2 = x2 + y2 − 2xy
(i)
Square of 2x − 3y = (2x − 3y)2
= (2x)2 + (3y)2 − 2 × 2x × 3y
= 4x2 + 9y2 − 12xy
(ii)
Square of x − 2 = (x − 2)2
= x2 + 22 − 2 × x × 2
= x2 + 4 − 4x
(iii)
Square of 2x − 1 = (2x − 1)2
= (2x)2 + (i)2 − 2 × 2x × 1
= 4x2 + 1 − 4x
