Find the squares of the algebraic expressions given below:

(i) 2x − 3y

(ii) x − 2

(iii) 2x − 1

We know that (x y)2 = x2 + y2 2xy

(i)

Square of 2x 3y = (2x 3y)2

= (2x)2 + (3y)2 2 × 2x × 3y

= 4x2 + 9y2 12xy

(ii)

Square of x 2 = (x 2)2

= x2 + 22 2 × x × 2

= x2 + 4 4x

(iii)

Square of 2x 1 = (2x 1)2

= (2x)2 + (i)2 2 × 2x × 1

= 4x2 + 1 4x
