Find the value of XY for the complex [CoBr2(CN)(NO2)(H2O)(NH3)]
where:
X = Number of compounds when both Br− are at cis position.
Y = Number of compounds when both Br− are at trans position.

Solution
[CO(Br)2(CN)(NO2)(H2O)(NH3)] NO−2andCN−both are ambidentate ligands. Br− at trans position (optically inactive). Br− at cis position (optical active complex)
The number of geometrical isomers keeping Br− at cis position is 6 and all of them are optically active.
So there are twelve cis isomers. ∴X=12Y=3(optical inactive complex)
