Question

Find the value of XY for the complex [CoBr2(CN)(NO2)(H2O)(NH3)]
where:
X = Number of compounds when both Br are at cis position.
Y = Number of compounds when both Br are at trans position.

Solution

[CO(Br)2(CN)(NO2)(H2O)(NH3)]
NO2and CNboth are ambidentate ligands.
Br at trans position (optically inactive).
Br at cis position (optical active complex)
The number of geometrical isomers keeping Br at cis position is 6 and all of them are optically active.
So there are twelve cis isomers.
X=12Y=3 (optical inactive complex)

XY=123=41
XY=4
