Question

Find the value of k if the lines given by 3x+2ky=2 ; 2x+5y=12 are parallel

Open in App
Solution

If two lines are parallel,then their slopes are equal

For a straight line with equation ax +by + c = 0,

the slope is given by m = -a/b.

Let the slope of 3x + 2ky = 2 be 'm1′.

Let the slope of 2x + 5y + 1 = 0 be 'm2′.

Slope of 3x + 2ky = 2 is m1 = -3/2k.

Slope of 2x + 5y + 1 = 0 is m2 = -2/5.

Since the two lines are parallel,

m1 = m2. So,

-3/2k = -2/5

3×5 = 2k×2

15 = 4k

=> k = 15/4.
