Question

Find the value of λ, so that the equations x2x12=0 and λx2+10x+3=0 may have one root in common.Also, find the common root.

Open in App
Solution

x2x12=0

(x4)(x+3)=0

x=4,3

If x=4 is a common root, then

λ(4)2+10×4+3=0
16λ=43

λ=4316
and if x=3 is a common root, then

λ(3)2+10×3+3=0
9λ=27

λ=279=3

Hence for λ=4316, common root is x=4

and for λ=3, common root is x=3
