Question

First and second I.E. of few elements given below:

I.E1 (kJ/mole)
I.E.2 (kJ/mole)
(A)
520
730
(B)
1680
3380
(C)
2370
5250
Identify the above as alkaline earth metal, reactive non-metal and a noble gas?

Solution

As (A) has first Ionization enthalpy around 520, it can be classified as alkaline earth metal moreover, the rise in its second I.E. suggest that it is alkaline earth metal because after removing one e it increases.
Now, (B) has its first I.E. around 1680 but its second I.E. 3380, which is not that much high than the case of (C) hence, we will conclude that (B) is reactive non-metal and (C) is noble gas because of its enormous first & second I.E..
