Question

First and second ionization energies of magnesium are 6.64 eV and 13.36 eV respectively. The amount of energy in J needed to convert all the atoms of magnesium into Mg2+ ions present in 12 mg of magnesium vapour will be? [Given: 1 eV=96.5 kJ/mol].

Solution

12 mg Mg= 0.5 mmol Mg as the molar mass is 24 g/mol.
Mg(g)Mg2+(g)+2e
ΔH=IE1+IE2=6.64+13.36=20 eV=20×96.5 kJ/mol
Energy required to convert 0.5 mmol Mg(g) to Mg2+(g) will be, 0.5×20×96.5 J=965 J
