Question

First and second ionization energies of magnesium are 7 and 15 eV respectively. The amount of energy in kJ mol1 needed to convert all the atoms of Magnesium into Mg2+ ions present in 12 mg of magnesium vapours is: (Report your answer upto two decimal)
[Given: 1 eV=96.5 kJ mol1]

Solution

Number of moles of Mg=12 mg24 g=0.5×103 mol
Energy required per atom=7+15=22 eV
energy required per mole=(22×96.5) kJ mol1=21.23×102 kJ mol1
Eneeded=21.23×102×0.5×103
=1.06 kJ mol1
