Question

For a reaction FeO(s)+CO(g)Fe(s)+CO2(g) the value of Kρ at 1373K is 0.505.If the reaction mixture has 1 mole eaach of Fe and FeO,1.5 atm CO and 0.6atm CO2,in which direction will the reaction go?

Solution

FeO(s)+CO(g)Fe(s)+CO2(g)
As, Δn= (Number of moles of products) (Number of moles of reactants) =11=0
So, Kp=Kc(RT)Δn
Kp=Kc;
Kp=PCO2PCO
Kc=[CO2][CO]
Given, Kp=0.505
Q=PCO2PCO=0.61.5=25=0.4
As, Q<Kp so reaction will proceed to increase CO2. So, reaction proceeds forward.
