For an object, its good to have a distribution of mass closer to the ground for better stability. Let's have look at the following diagram, which explains the working of a dancing doll. Here, since, the distribution of more mass is closer to the ground, even if you push the doll on one side, it goes back to its stable position i.e. vertical position. This illustrates why the center of mass shifts depending upon the distribution of mass. This is an example of stability based on the COM.
