Question

For the following equilibrium (omitting charges)
I. M+ClMCl, Keq=β1
II. MCl+ClMCl2, Keq=β2
III. MCl+ClMCl3, Keq=β3

Solution

The correct option is A All of the above
When we add reactions I, II and III, we get reaction IV.
When individual reactions are added, their equilibrium constant values are multiplied.
K=β1β2β3
Taking logarithm on both sides
logK=logβ1+logβ2+logβ3
But
pK=logK
Hence,
pK=pβ1+pβ2+pβ3
Hence, the option (D) all of the above is the correct answer.
