Question

For the following question, arrange the sentences A, B, C, and D between sentences 1 and 6 to form a logical sequence with sentence 1 and sentence 6 as the starting sentence and the concluding sentence respectively:

(1) Man has existed for about a million years.
(P) Science, as a dominant factor in determining the beliefs of educated human beings, has existed for about 300 years and as a source of economic technique for about 150 years.
(Q) When we consider how recently it has risen to power, we find ourselves forced to believe that we are at the very beginning of its contribution to transforming human life.
(R) In this brief period, it has proved itself as an incredibly powerful revolutionary force.
(S) He has possessed writing for about 6000 years, and agriculture for perhaps just a little longer.
(6) What its future effects will be is a matter of conjecture, but possibly a study of its effects up till now may make the conjecture a little more meaningful.

Solution

The correct option is C SPRQ
The first sentence is about man and his existence. From the options, S begins with a pronoun 'he', it refers to man. 'He' is a connecting word that connects (1) to (S), 'he' refers to man who has learnt to write and agricultural practices. Hence S must follow next. ('He' can only refer to man, it can not refer to science, which is the only other topic in focus). Options A and C do not begin with sentence (S) hence both these options do not contain a logical sequence of sentences and they are incorrect.
After sentence S, another topic is taken into focus: science, which has existed for 300 years. This is mentioned in P: Science, as a dominant factor... educated human beings..., hence P follows S. The phrase "in this brief period" refers to something that has been mentioned before, here it refers to the period of science, hence it is implied that R follows P. (So, science has proved itself as a revolutionary force.)
In sentence Q, 'it' refers to something, that is science, which has led to the belief that we, humans, are at the beginning of contribution towards transformation of human life. 'It' is a connecting word that connects the sentences P R and Q in this order. Hence the logical sequence is: SPRQ and option D is correct.
Q does not follow S, because in Q, the pronoun 'it' in "how recently it has risen to power" refers to something (science), not man, 'he' refers to man. Hence Q is not the direct continuation of S.
(Also, notice the timeline, it begins from history dated a million years back, to the present: humans came into existence about a million years. Then, they've learnt how to write, for 6000 years. After that, science came into existence, a result of human intelligence, 300 years back.)
