A fungus is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and moulds, as well as the more familiar mushrooms. The fungi lack chlorophyll. They cannot synthesize their own food and are therefore heterotrophs. Saprophytic fungi obtain their food the from the dead organic material. parasitic fungi do so by feeding on living organisms (usually plants), thus causing disease.
