In preparation of hydrogen gas in the laboratory the hydrogen is collected in the following manner:
Hydrogen is collected with the help of a delivery tube via the downward displacement of water because :
(i) It is almost insoluble in water.
(ii) It forms an explosive mixture with air and hence cannot be collected by downward displacement of air although it is lighter than air.
