For the laboratory preparation of hydrogen, give the following
(a) materials used,
(b) method of collection,
(c) chemical equation,
(d) a fully labelled diagram.
To prepare hydrogen gas in the laboratory following procedure is followed.
(a) Materials used: a few pieces of granulated zinc, a flat-bottomed flask fitted with an air-tight cork having two holes, a thistle funnel, delivery tube.
(b) method of collection: Hydrogen is collected by downward displacement of water because :
(i) It is almost insoluble in water.
(ii) It forms an explosive mixture with air and hence cannot be collected by downward displacement of air although it is lighter than air.
(c) chemical equation:
(d) A fully labelled diagram.
