In recent years, the development of powerful viral gene transfer techniques has greatly facilitated the study of gene function.
Genetic material passes from one bacterium to another is called transformation and sometimes viral DNA of a bacteriophage( virus affecting bacteria) is used for gene transfer, this is called transduction.
